Yesterday I watched an Art21 video on Liz Magor (Vancouver Series), today I watched a randomly chosen tinkering video about artist Cathy McIvor (both watched during my lunch hour of course...). I couldn't help comparing and contrasting these two artists - and wondering when does a tinkerer become an artist? Where does the shift happen to make something "art"? (or serious art or higher art or better art, or more more honoured/recognized, exhibition worthy art...) Is it the way the artist presents themselves? How they articulate their statement or message? Their creative process? Craftspersonship? Intent? Aesthetics? Presentation? Grant writing ability? Connections? Artist photo? (Does holding scissors in your mouth help or hinder?) Anyway, certainly thought provoking.
One thing I know for sure, I definitely need more time to research, explore, observe, connect, listen, contemplate, experiment, play... and tinker! In the meantime, back to the classroom!!
